The City of Martinez was one of the first cities in Contra Costa County to adopt a Climate Action Plan (“CAP”) in 2009 in response to Assembly Bill 32. The City’s CAP presents goals to reduce emissions from sources within the City, shift to renewable energy sources, and prepare for a changing climate.

Climate Action Activities

  • Recognized as a Tree City USA since 2003.
  • Adopted Climate Action Plan in 2009.
  • Joined Marin Clean Energy (“MCE”), a not-for-profit public electricity provider, in 2018, and the City Council approved opting up all City electricity accounts to MCE’s Deep Green 100-percent Renewable Energy plan in 2019.
  • City Hall and the Police Department achieved Green Business Recertification in 2023.
  • Approved the Waterfront Marina Trust Lands Use Plan in 2024, which includes climate adaptation principles to prepare the waterfront and maria for the inevitable sea-level rise.
  • Acquired the 297.5-acre Alhambra Hills property for permanent public parkland and wildlife habitat, in 2022.
  • Established the Mobility Hub at the Martinez Amtrak station.
  • Established and maintained Recycling Partnership between the City, local Non-Profit organization New Leaf Collaborative, Martinez Unified School District, and Republic Services to provide eco-literacy education and implement effective and self-sustaining recycling systems in Martinez schools.
  • Partnered with Sustainable Contra Costa in the Cleaner Contra Costa Challenge, which is an online platform that helps residents take action to reduce their environmental impact.
