About Summer JAM
In 2022, ILG launched the Summer Jobs and Ambassadors in Motion
program. The program served nearly 20 high school students living
or attending school in the City of Sacramento. Each student who
completed the program’s 40 service and work-based learning hours
earned a $500 stipend. The program was funded by the City of
Sacramento and PRO Youth and Families #SacYouthWorks initiative.
The program combined local government civics education curriculum
with public sector career pathways exploration. Students
participated in the program via in-person and virtual sessions
where they learned:
- The main functions of city, county and special district forms
of government
- How to be civically engaged in their communities
- How to build upon civic engagement and advocate for issues
that matter
- What careers are available in the public sector across all
income levels and education requirements
- The process for aligning their education and career plans to
achieve their professional goals
- How they can prepare to be job-ready and how to develop their
professional skills including how to write a resume, interview
strategies and workplace etiquette
Students heard from local government leaders and staff from
cities, counties and special districts across California
including: the Citrus Heights Water District, Humboldt County,
the California Special Districts Association, and more. Each
speaker provided insights into their careers and mentorship
advice for students about how they can successfully start careers
in the public sector.
As part of the curriculum and our partnership with the
#SacYouthWorks program, ILG was also able to connect students
with online learning platforms IMAGO and My10YearPlan. Students
used these platforms to complete professional development modules
and map out their career goals.
Sacramento Visit Day
As part of the program’s curriculum, students had the chance to
attend a Sacramento Visit Day where they attended local
government meetings, toured government facilities, and heard from
guest speakers making an impact in Sacramento. Students were
recognized by the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors and
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg for their participation in the
Summer JAM program. ILG thanks our generous guest speakers:
Sparky Harris (Principal Planner, Sacramento), Kelly Fong Rivas
(Senior Advisor, Sacramento), and Andru Defeye (Sacramento Poet
Laureate) for taking the time to engage with Summer JAM students.
ILG appreciates the generous support of the City of
Sacramento and PRO Youth & Families for making the inaugural
cohort of Summer JAM possible.
