Agency counsel plays an important role in providing information on public service ethics laws.  Understanding that role (and its limitations) is important for public agency officials and public agency attorneys alike.

The letter in the box at right is a sample letter for local agency attorneys to use in transmitting both information on ethics laws and explaining their office’s role in advising on those laws.

It also includes information on AB 1234 compliance options for covered officials to assist the agency in complying with the requirement that the agency advise local officials of their compliance options. See California Government Code Section 53235(f).
