Transportation & Health: Policy Interventions for Safer, Healthier Communities & People
Partnership for Prevention & Safe Transportation Research & Education Center, 2011
The current transportation system in the U.S. was built with a focus on motor vehicles. Expanding our transportation system to include other forms of travel, such as biking, walking and public transit, will improve access to community services for vulnerable populations, increase community sustainability, improve individual health, reduce health care costs and stimulate economic growth.
This report examines transportation policies in three critical areas: the environment and environmental health, community design and active transportation, and motor vehicle-related injuries and fatalities. Policymakers at all levels can use this report to inform decision-making regarding transportation.
